What’s the Book About?

Clinical Reasoning: Rhymes, Reflection, and Reason is a creative and reflective exploration of what it truly means to “reason” in clinical practice today.

Through poetry, case-based narrative, systems thinking and decision-making frameworks, the book takes readers on a journey through the evolving landscape of musculoskeletal care, from the ancient roots of diagnosis to the complexity of Primary Care and First Contact Practice.

Written for clinicians, educators, and students alike, it invites you to slow down, reflect, and reimagine your own approach to clinical reasoning.

Why Second Curve Thinking?

The book was born from a question, what comes after the first curve?

In a world of increasing complexity, the traditional linear approach to healthcare reasoning often falls short. This is where Second Curve Thinking emerges — a mindset for those navigating the next phase in healthcare: one shaped by uncertainty, interconnection, and reflection.

“The second curve is the future. The first curve is the past. The challenge is to start the second before the first runs out.”

👀Sneak Peek: From Philosophy to Poetry

“From Hippocrates’ breath to Bayesian thought,

We reason through patterns and wisdom long sought.

In systems and symptoms our questions are sown,

The patient before us, a truth of their own.”

This book weaves together stories, frameworks, and reflections on red flags, cultural humility, cognitive bias, collaborative decision-making, and more. It’s academic, yes, but it’s also human.
